Why Zengshan Buyi Is Our Canon

This course follows Zengshan Buyi because it gives us a disciplined reading standard.
It does not ask us to collect every inherited omen. It asks us to test whether a doctrine actually explains the cast and the outcome. That is why Yehe Laoren’s reform matters: he keeps the palace and calendar-line skeleton, but refuses to let symbolic catalogs overrule the working mechanics of the chart.
The canon stack
Yehe Laoren's reformist case corpus. This is the main source standard for the course.
A rigorous orthodox companion text, especially useful for method checks and refutations.
A domain-reading framework embedded in the tradition and used for practical question routing.
Later or parallel systems may be real traditions, but they do not set this course's decision rules.
When this course says “canonical,” it means these sources carry the weight. Modern books, forum posts, and blended methods can be useful for comparison, but they do not override the source stack.
Source basis: the Zengshan Buyi case corpus, Bushi Zhengzong method and refutation chapters, and Huang Jin Ce domain frameworks. Source-language titles are kept in the terminology reference and source notes rather than repeated throughout the lesson body.
The One Principle
Yehe’s famous slogan can be taught in plain working English:
The many auspicious and inauspicious spirit-symbols cannot compare to the single principle of generation, control, restraint, and transformation.
That sentence does the work of a manifesto. It does not say symbolic labels have no descriptive value. It says they do not decide the outcome. The chart is decided by the relationship among the target line, support, obstacle, movement, transformation, month, and day.
Generation, control, movement, transformation, month, and day form the reading engine.
Every reading orbits the line that represents the question. Choose the wrong target and you read the wrong matter.
They may color interpretation, but they do not overturn the mechanical verdict.
This is the core contract for the whole course. If a rule fights this contract, it has to earn its place with strong source evidence.
The lineage we do not follow
There are legitimate Wen Wang Gua-adjacent traditions that preserve heavier symbolic apparatus. The important point is not to insult them. The important point is to avoid mixing methods as if they were interchangeable.
Target line, line roles, calendar strength, movement, support, obstruction, and timing carry the judgment.
Large symbolic catalogs are allowed to weigh into the verdict as determining factors.
The two lanes can produce different readings on the same chart. That is why this course chooses one lane and stays in it.
The false-comfort trap
You will eventually meet neat-sounding claims that present themselves as advanced taxonomy: three schools of moving-line transformation, fixed shortcuts for recasting, symbolic overrides, or inherited rules that decide an outcome before the full chart is read.
The course policy is simple:
Which text actually teaches this rule?
Does the rule explain verified outcomes, or only sound plausible?
If the doctrine belongs to another method, do not smuggle it into this one.
We will return to refuted doctrines in Act 10. For now, the point is orientation: attractive taxonomy is not automatically true.
A case that shows the reform
One classical illness case shows why Yehe’s reform matters. The surface state looked bad. An older static rule could have treated the target line as hopeless. Yehe did not stop at the surface state. He checked the movement, support, void condition, and timing. The chart showed a recovery path, and the recorded outcome matched the timing.
The target is the wife's line, read through the relevant relationship role.
A static reading could treat this as fatalistic evidence.
A recovery line moved, and the next day's timing activated the rescue path.
Read the whole mechanism before declaring the outcome.
The lesson is not “every bad-looking chart is secretly good.” The lesson is stricter: no single label gets to overrule the full mechanics of the chart. That is the One Principle in practice.
For accuracy, keep this example in its own lane: this is a void-and-rescue case. Month Break is a separate doctrine with its own rules, taught later in the strength act. Both doctrines can be misread fatalistically, but they are not the same mechanism.

Where this lands us
The canon is settled. We follow Zengshan Buyi, corroborated by Bushi Zhengzong and Huang Jin Ce. We accept the One Principle, target-line centrality, and the demotion of spirit-symbol catalogs. We do not mix symbolic-school decision rules into this course.
Before we ask how to read a cast, we still have to ask whether a question deserves a cast at all.
