There is one row left in the static skeleton.

Many Wen Wang Gua charts place a Six Spirits label beside each line. The labels sound dramatic: Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, Hooking Array, Soaring Serpent, White Tiger, Black Tortoise. That is exactly why they need careful handling.

In this course, the Six Spirits are commentary. They can color the kind of event the chart describes, but they do not decide whether the event happens, whether it is favorable, or when it resolves. The verdict still comes from the target line, strength, interactions, motion, transformation, and timing.

The source hierarchy is useful here: Six Relatives are the root structure; Six Spirits are an accompanying branch. Broader lucky-or-unlucky spirit systems sit even further out. So we do not ignore the Six Spirits, but we keep them in rank. They can refine the language of a reading after the mechanical analysis is already sound.

Use it for Texture

A health chart may feel sharper, more hidden, more public, or more celebratory depending on the spirit attached to a relevant line.

Do not use it for Verdict

A spirit label does not override strength, generation, control, combination, clash, void, or timing.

Best habit Read it last

First solve the chart mechanically. Then let the spirit row add narrative color if the domain calls for it.

The six labels

Wood Azure Dragon

Growth, vitality, celebration, visible support.

Fire Vermilion Bird

Speech, messages, visibility, disputes, public expression.

Earth Hooking Array

Delay, heaviness, entanglement, things that stick or drag.

Earth Soaring Serpent

Worry, uncertainty, hidden pressure, confusing turns.

Metal White Tiger

Sharpness, conflict, injury, severity, sudden impact.

Water Black Tortoise

Concealment, secrecy, theft, hidden movement, unclear motives.

The rotation rule

The row is derived from the day stem. The day stem tells you which spirit starts on line 1. From there, the fixed sequence runs upward through the six lines:

Azure Dragon Vermilion Bird Hooking Array Soaring Serpent White Tiger Black Tortoise
Jia or Yi day Azure Dragon

starts on line 1

Bing or Ding day Vermilion Bird

starts on line 1

Wu day Hooking Array

starts on line 1

Ji day Soaring Serpent

starts on line 1

Geng or Xin day White Tiger

starts on line 1

Ren or Gui day Black Tortoise

starts on line 1

That is the whole calculation. Find the day stem, anchor line 1, then climb upward through the cycle.

Case 1

Case 1 was cast on a Wu-Shen day. The day stem is Wu, so Hooking Array starts on line 1.

Case 1 · Father's Recent Illness Wu day rotation

Hooking Array anchors line 1. The sequence then runs upward through the chart.

The tempting mistake is obvious: the target line is under White Tiger, so a rushed reader might call the father’s illness severe or fatal on that label alone.

That is not how this course reads the chart. In the source case, the actual judgment turns on the moving Officer line, the changed line, a combination blocking generation, and the day that releases that combination. The father recovers. The White Tiger label can color the health context as sharp or serious, but it does not write the verdict.

Where it earns its keep

The Six Spirits become useful when the main analysis has already identified the line that matters and you need a little more language for the event.

Health or accidents White Tiger

Can reinforce a sharp, painful, surgical, violent, or sudden quality when the structural health analysis already points there.

Theft or concealment Black Tortoise

Can reinforce hidden motives, secrecy, deception, or someone operating out of view.

Messages and disputes Vermilion Bird

Can add speech, documents, announcements, argument, or public visibility to a line already involved in the answer.

Those are supporting details, not a separate system of judgment. If the Five Phases and calendar say the line has no power, the spirit label does not rescue it. If the mechanics say the event resolves cleanly, the spirit label does not overturn that.

This is also why a spirit can sharpen a reading without reversing it. A favorable structure under Azure Dragon may read as visibly helpful or celebratory; an unfavorable structure under White Tiger may read as sharper, harsher, or more abrupt. But the spirit follows the verdict. It does not create the verdict by itself.

The trap

Do not read the Six Spirits as a shortcut.

Bad shortcut Label first

White Tiger means bad. Azure Dragon means good. Soaring Serpent means danger. This turns a technical chart into a mood board.

Better method Mechanics first

Choose the target line, judge strength, follow motion and transformation, read timing, then let the spirit row add tone.

Where this lands us

The static skeleton is now complete.

You can place a hexagram in its palace, identify the palace element, assign stems and branches, derive the Six Relatives, place World and Response, construct the changed hexagram, and rotate the Six Spirits from the day stem.

Everything so far is still static. The lines have labels, but they do not yet have strength, void, seasonal support, day clash, combination, or speed.

Time enters next. → Act 3: The Calendar.
