The Month sets the baseline. Seasonal Strength names that baseline with five labels.

This is where the Five Phases wheel becomes a reading tool. Compare the line’s element to the Month’s element, name the relationship, then carry that label forward into the rest of the judgment.

Do not turn this into a score. The five states are qualitative positions in a hierarchy, not numbers to average.

State 1 Prosperous

Same element as the Month. The line stands inside the season's authority.

State 2 Supported

The Month generates the line. The season feeds the line directly.

State 3 Resting

The line generates the Month. It has given its force to the season and is tired.

State 4 Constrained

The line controls the Month. It tries to press the season and loses the contest.

State 5 Dead

The Month controls the line. The season suppresses the line directly.

The rule

There are only five possible element relationships between a line and the Month.

Same Line = Month

Prosperous. The line shares the Month's element.

Fed Month generates line

Supported. The season is giving energy to the line.

Spent Line generates Month

Resting. The line has spent itself feeding the season.

Captured Line controls Month

Constrained. The line tries to attack the season and gets bound.

Defeated Month controls line

Dead. The season attacks the line and the line has little room to act.

The two easy states are Prosperous and Supported. The line is either aligned with the Month or fed by it.

The three weak states need more care. Resting, Constrained, and Dead are all weak, but they are weak for different reasons.

Resting Weak because it gave.

The line generates the Month. It is the prior step in the cycle, so it has poured force into the current season.

Constrained Weak because it fought.

The line controls the Month. It tries to suppress the season, but the season is the stronger authority.

That distinction matters later. A tired supporter and a captured attacker do not behave the same way when moving lines, Day pressure, or target-line selection enter the reading.

The memory hook is simple: Resting gave; Constrained fought. Resting is weak because it spent itself feeding the season. Constrained is weak because it tried to control the season and lost. Both are weak, but they do not tell the same story.

Earth month example

Case 1 happens in a Chen month, which is an Earth month. Fix the Month at Earth and the whole ladder becomes visible.

Earth line Prosperous

Same element as the Month.

Metal line Supported

Earth generates Metal.

Fire line Resting

Fire generates Earth.

Wood line Constrained

Wood controls Earth.

Water line Dead

Earth controls Water.

This is not a second table to memorize. It is one pass around the Five Phases wheel with Earth as the Month.

Case 1: every line gets a seasonal label

The father-illness reading is useful because the six lines show the whole ladder. Month: Chen / Earth.

Line 1 - Zi / Water Dead

Earth controls Water, so the Month suppresses this Child line.

Line 2 - Yin / Wood Constrained

Wood controls Earth, so this Wealth line fights the Month and is bound.

Line 3 - Chen / Earth Prosperous

Same branch and same element as the Month. This Parent line sits on the Month.

Line 4 - Wu / Fire Resting

Fire generates Earth, so this Officer line has spent force into the Month.

Line 5 - Shen / Metal Supported

Earth generates Metal, so the Month feeds this Sibling line.

Line 6 - Xu / Earth Month-Broken

Elementally Prosperous, but Chen clashes Xu. The clash overrides the ladder.

The override

Line 6 is the important warning.

By element alone, Xu / Earth in a Chen / Earth month would be Prosperous. Same element. That part is true.

But Chen and Xu are a clash pair. A line clashing the Month becomes Month-Broken, and that special status outranks the five-state ladder in practice.

Element reading Xu / Earth matches Chen / Earth.

The ordinary seasonal label would be Prosperous.

Branch reading Chen clashes Xu.

The branch relationship triggers Month-Broken.

Operational result Month-Broken wins.

Read the special status first. Do not average it with Prosperous.

The same pattern will matter with Void and Dark Moving. Special states layer on top of the seasonal label; they do not become arithmetic modifiers.

Do not score it

The biggest modern mistake is turning these five labels into a numeric strength system.

Bad habit Prosperous = 5, Dead = 1.

That feels tidy, but it hides how the tradition actually reasons through lines.

Better habit Name the state, then apply conditions.

Seasonal strength, Void, Month-Broken, Day pressure, moving lines, and target selection are categorical findings.

Why it matters Patterns beat averages.

A Dead line can be rescued. A Prosperous line can be unusable while Void. A Month-Broken line is not "half strong."

Seasonal Strength gives every line a calendar baseline. The Day Branch can then support, pressure, clash, release, or secretly activate that line.

Act 3 is now complete in principle: every line has a branch, an element, a Month condition, and a Day condition. You can now describe the calendar state of the chart, but you still cannot finish the reading until you know which line the question is actually asking about.
