Moving, Changing, Transformed

So far, the cast has been mostly static: palace, palace element, branch labels, line roles, World, and Response. Those labels tell us what the chart is.

Motion tells us what the chart is doing.

When a line moves, the cast has two connected hexagrams:

• Primary hexagram — the hexagram that was cast.
• Changed hexagram — the hexagram produced after the moving lines flip.
• Transformed line — the changed-side line that a moving line becomes.

Source basis: Zengshan Buyi uses this primary-to-changed structure throughout its case records. The traditional source labels are collected in the course terminology reference; this module uses the working English labels.

The rule

The construction is mechanical:

That is all the geometry. No interpretation yet. First, build the changed hexagram correctly.

Case 1

Case 1 starts with Qian over Heaven. One line moves: line 4. After line 4 flips, the changed hexagram is Wind over Heaven.

Five lines copy across unchanged. Line 4 flips. That single flip is enough to change the upper trigram, so the whole hexagram becomes Wind over Heaven.

Moving line vs transformed line

The line on the left side is the moving line. The matching line on the right side is the transformed line.

This is the minimum distinction learners need:

• The moving line is Officer / Wu / Fire on the primary side.
• The transformed line is Parent / Wei / Earth on the changed side.
• The line number stays the same: line 4 becomes line 4.
• The branch, element, and role can change.

What that transformation means for the father’s recovery comes later. For now, the job is to write it down correctly.

Labeling the changed side

The changed hexagram has its own shape, branches, and line labels. But there is one important rule:

Changed-side roles are still calculated against the primary palace element.

In Case 1, the primary hexagram is in the Qian palace, whose element is Metal. The changed hexagram, Wind over Heaven, belongs to a different palace if you look it up by itself. But this cast is not a new question. It remains anchored in the primary Qian palace.

So line 4 is labeled like this:

That is why a single moving line can change from Officer to Parent. The changed side is not decorative. It gives the motion its result.

What motion means later

A useful working frame:

The moving line starts the arc. The transformed line shows where that arc lands. Act VI will classify those arcs: whether the transformed line helps, harms, retreats, advances, becomes empty, becomes broken, or changes role.

The classical shorthand is simple: the moving line is the beginning of the matter, and the transformed line is the end. That does not mean the changed hexagram is a fortune-cookie answer. It means a moving line has a direction. The primary-side line shows what has been set in motion; the transformed-side line shows where that motion resolves.

We are not interpreting yet because the interpretation depends on target-line selection and strength analysis. Here, we only need the structure.

The traps

The right posture is: both sides matter, but they do different jobs. The primary side is where the question lives. The changed side shows where motion goes.

Where this lands us

For Case 1:

• Primary: Qian over Heaven.
• Changed: Wind over Heaven.
• Moving line: line 4, Officer / Wu / Fire.
• Transformed line: line 4, Parent / Wei / Earth.
• Other lines: copied across unchanged.

That completes the main static structure of the cast: palace, palace element, branch labels, line roles, World/Response, and motion. One row of the diagram remains: the Six Spirits.
