When Combination Blocks Generation
Last updated 5/21/2026
This is the Act 5 payoff.
The chart can show a support line that should help the target, and that support can still fail because combination blocks the support path.
A moving support line appears to generate what the target needs.
Combination captures the support before it can reach the target.
Case 1 support path
In Case 1, the target is the Parent line at line 3: Chen / Earth.
The apparent rescue is the moving Fire line at line 4. Fire generates Earth. That looks favorable.
But the moving Fire line transforms into Wei / Earth, and Wu + Wei form a combination. The support turns inward and cannot pass generation onward to the target.
Moving Fire should be able to generate Earth.
The transformation creates a combination that holds the support in place.
The target needs support, but the support does not arrive.
The rule is simple:
A bound support path cannot generate outside the lock.
This is not the same as the target being bound. In a bound-target case, the target itself cannot act. Here the target is waiting for help, but the helper is locked before the help can travel.
Why this is hard
The chart looks favorable on the surface.
The father's target line sits on the Month.
A Fire line moves and should feed Earth.
The case promises quick resolution.
The rescue path is visible but cannot actually reach the target.
This is why Act 5 insists on interactions rather than score. A numeric score would say “moving support: good.” The actual reading says “moving support is locked: no rescue yet.”
Release
A combination lock releases when a clash breaks one side of the combination.
The support line is tied into combination.
A calendar branch clashes one side of the combination.
Only after release can the rescue path work.
The exact timing rules belong to Act 8. Here the important point is structural: support that is locked does not arrive until the lock is released.
Common traps
Fire generates Earth, but that does not mean Fire can always reach Earth.
A moving line can bind with what it transforms into.
If the locked line is harmful, release can let harm arrive instead of help.
Source basis: Zengshan Buyi, Case 1; Huang Jin Ce combination-release principle. Exact release timing is deferred to Act 8.
What this module establishes
Act 5 closes with the central interaction lesson:
support must be present, active, and able to reach the target.
If combination blocks the path, apparent help is not real help yet.
