Double Appearance was the problem of too many target candidates.

Hidden Spirit is the opposite problem: the question asks for a role that does not appear anywhere on the visible chart.

A document question needs Parent. A money question needs Wealth. A promotion question needs Officer. If the visible chart has no line of that type, we do not give up. The target is treated as hidden behind one of the visible lines.

Question Document, parent, license, record

The target type is Parent.

Visible chart No Parent line appears

The needed role is absent from the six visible positions.

Method Retrieve the hidden target

Use the palace primary hexagram to locate the missing role.

Flying and hidden

Every visible line has a line behind it.

Surface Flying Spirit

The visible line already printed on the chart.

Underneath Hidden Spirit

The concealed line recovered from the palace primary when the target role is absent.

Most readings never need the hidden layer. If the target role is visible, read the visible target. Hidden Spirit only matters when the question’s required role is missing from the surface.

A missing role is structural, not a verdict by itself. A six-line chart cannot show every possible relationship in every visible position. Hidden retrieval restores the palace’s full role cabinet before interpretation begins.

The retrieval rule

The rule is mechanical:

1 Confirm absence

The question's target role does not appear on the visible chart.

2 Find the palace

Identify which palace the cast belongs to.

3 Open the palace primary

Use that palace's doubled-trigram primary hexagram.

4 Match the line position

The missing role is recovered from the same line position in the palace primary.

Same palace. Same line position. That is the whole retrieval.

This is geometry, not interpretation. The hidden line is not chosen by feel, drama, or plausibility. It is located by the palace structure.

The palace primary matters because it is the complete root form of the palace. When the current hexagram lacks the needed role, the primary supplies the concealed counterpart at the matching line position.

A worked retrieval

Use an Earth-palace cast where the visible chart has no Parent line. That absence matters if the question is about a document, certification, parent, record, exam result, or formal notice.

Question Where is the document?

Document questions use Parent as the target role.

Visible chart Earth-palace cast

The six visible lines include Child, Wealth, Sibling, and Officer, but no Parent.

Palace primary Earth over Earth

The palace primary contains the full role cabinet for this palace.

Retrieved target Line 2 - Parent / Si / Fire

The missing Parent is hidden beneath the visible line at line 2.

The visible line at that position is the Flying Spirit. The recovered Parent line is the Hidden Spirit. For the document question, the Hidden Spirit is the target. The visible cover affects it, but the cover is not the target.

Visible cover Line 2 - Officer / Yin / Wood

This is the Flying Spirit on the surface.

Recovered target Line 2 - Parent / Si / Fire

This is the Hidden Spirit carrying the document question.

The retrieval tells us where the target lives. The next question is how the visible cover treats the hidden target.

Four cover relationships

Once Flying and Hidden occupy the same position, compare their elements.

Flying generates Hidden Supported

The visible cover feeds the hidden target. This is the most favorable cover relationship.

Flying controls Hidden Suppressed

The visible cover presses down on the hidden target. Emergence is obstructed.

Hidden controls Flying Pressing upward

The hidden target has force against its cover. It can break through actively.

Hidden generates Flying Drained

The hidden target feeds the visible cover and loses force by doing so.

In the worked example, the visible cover is Wood and the hidden target is Fire. Wood generates Fire, so the cover is supportive: Flying generates Hidden.

The relationship does not replace the target selection. It tells you the condition of the recovered target once the target has been found.

The rejected shortcut

Some later materials describe a rotation method: exchange hidden lines between paired trigrams instead of returning to the palace primary.

We are not using that method.

Do not use Paired-trigram rotation

It swaps hidden lines across trigram pairs and can produce a different target.

Use this Palace-primary retrieval

Return to the cast's own palace primary and recover the same line position.

Wang Hong-xu explicitly defends the palace-primary method and rejects the rotation method. For this course, palace-primary retrieval is the standard.

Source basis: Bushi Zhengzong, refutation of the paired-trigram rotation method; course source synthesis, refutation section.

Trap

After retrieval, there are two lines at the same position. It is easy to keep reading the visible cover because it is the line printed on the chart.

That is the wrong target.

Visible line Affects the target

The Flying Spirit is the cover, condition, and local environment.

Hidden line Carries the question

When the needed role is absent, the retrieved Hidden Spirit is the target.

The question chooses the target role. If that role is absent, the hidden line carries it. The visible cover matters because it helps, suppresses, challenges, or drains the hidden target.

What this module establishes

When the target role is missing, use Hidden Spirit retrieval:

absence -> palace -> palace primary -> same line position -> Flying-Hidden relationship

That completes the main target-selection toolkit. We can handle visible targets, multiple candidates, World and Response selection, transformed carriers, domain synthesis, and now absent targets.

Next we test the whole selection system against twelve different questions.
