Every branch in the chart carries one of five elements. This lesson adds two directional relations—generation and control—without deciding whether either relation is active or important in the reading.

The two directional cycles

Generation:

Water → Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water

Control:

Direction must be explicit. “Wood controls Earth” is not interchangeable with “Earth controls Wood.” When adding an arrow to a worksheet, write both the source and target.

Water on lines 1 and 6 generates Wood on line 2.

That list is a relationship map, not a claim that every possible arrow is operating. Motion, target selection, calendar state, and the declared judgment order decide which relations are later evaluated.

For each statement, mark generation, control, or neither:

Failure control: if reversing the arrow leaves your answer unchanged, you have replaced a directional operation with a vague association. Rewrite the relation as a sentence with a subject and object.

Boundary

Generation is not automatically favorable; control is not automatically unfavorable. Those are interpretive judgments that depend on which line is selected and what role each line plays. The Five Phases here are chart mechanics, not moral labels or physical causes.

Branch Relationships
