易 經 · THE BOOK OF CHANGES
Consult the I Ching
A quiet moment. A question held within. A different way of seeing what is before you.
Write your question on paper, or simply hold it in mind. You never need to type it here.
An online I Ching reading
The I Ching, or Book of Changes, offers images and counsel for reflecting on change. Each consultation creates a hexagram of six lines, built from the bottom upward. Changing lines lead to a second hexagram, adding another perspective to your reading.
Coins or yarrow stalks?
Both methods lead to the same sixty-four hexagrams. With coins, you cast three coins six times. With yarrow, you set one of fifty stalks aside, then divide and count the remaining stalks in three stages for each line. The methods have different chances of producing changing lines; choose the pace that feels right for you.
How should I prepare?
Pause, breathe, and consider what you would like to understand. You may write your question privately, or keep it in mind as you cast. There is no question field and no sign-up. The casting and reading are calculated in your browser.
How do I read the answer?
After the sixth line, explore your hexagram, its changing lines, and the hexagram it becomes. Treat the text as an invitation to reflect on your situation. You can also explore the sixty-four hexagrams or learn more about using the oracle.
