The rice grain method is a tactile count method.

It is useful because it slows the student down. You hold a question, make one physical action, count what the action produced, and convert the count into a hexagram.

The object does not have to be rice. Beans, beads, coins, sticks, page numbers, or other countable items can train the same principle. Rice is traditional-feeling because it is ordinary, granular, and easy to count.

A Clean Training Version

  1. Write the question.
  2. Place a small bowl of intact rice grains in front of you, removing obviously broken grains if you are using rice.
  3. Take one small handful without trying to control the amount.
  4. Divide it into two piles without counting.
  5. Count pile A.
  6. Count pile B.
  7. Use pile A for the upper trigram.
  8. Use pile B for the lower trigram.
  9. Add A + B for the changing line.

Ritual Layer, Optional

Some modern teaching streams add a ritual layer: cleaning the space, using a dedicated bowl, or lightly anointing the grains before practice. That can make the exercise more memorable, but it is not the calculation.
