The External Event Method

The external event method begins when something in the environment becomes the cue.
A sound interrupts. A door opens. A bird calls. A glass breaks. A message arrives. A client mentions a direction. An object falls. The event is not treated as random noise, but it is also not treated as automatic fate. It becomes a structured input.
The Rule
Use the event that actually drew attention.
Do not scan the room for a better omen after the question is asked. Do not keep adding details until the reading sounds impressive. Choose the cue, write it down, and convert it.
A useful traditional filter is new change, new movement, new event. A cue should interrupt the field somehow: it arrives, shifts, sounds, opens, falls, appears, or otherwise becomes distinct. Background conditions that were already present before the question are usually weak inputs unless the question specifically concerns them.

The method becomes strong when the cue has a clear relation to the moment.
A Reproducible Flow
- State the question.
- Record the event.
- Decide what part of the event gives the upper trigram.
- Decide what part gives the lower trigram.
- Decide how to find the changing line.
- Calculate.

Course Case
Question: โDoes this workshop proposal have life in it?โ
Event: as the question is asked, three messages arrive in a group chat. The clock reads 14:27.

Primary hexagram: Hexagram 14, Great Possession.
Changed hexagram: Hexagram 30, Clarity.
Interpretive start:
- The event came through messages, so visibility, communication, and public response matter.
- Fire above Heaven suggests something bright resting on a strong structure.
- Fire controls Metal, so the visible push can pressure the proposalโs base.
- Line 2 keeps the reading practical: the issue is carrying capacity, vehicle, and usable support.
Testable reading:
The proposal has a visible charge, but it needs a stronger delivery structure. If the format, audience, and practical container are clarified, the idea can become more compelling. Without that structure, the visibility burns ahead of the vehicle.

Practice
For one week, record only three external-event readings. Do not overdo it.
For each one, write:
- Question.
- Event.
- Why that event counted.
- Formula.
- Hexagram.
- One-sentence interpretation.
- Later outcome or correction.
The practice is not to see signs everywhere. The practice is to notice when a moment has a clean signal and to handle it without inflation.
