Interpreting Plum Blossom Readings

This lesson turns a completed cast into a bounded written interpretation. Construction comes first; interpretation begins only after the inputs, arithmetic, hexagrams, and moving line are fixed.

Prerequisite: bring a complete cast with exactly one moving line. Your output is a three-sentence reading, confidence label, plausible alternative, stopping reason, and later review note.

The Reading Flow

Use this sequence:

1. Name the primary hexagram.
2. Name the changed hexagram.
3. Identify the moving line.
4. Assign Ti and Yong.
5. Read the Five Phase relationship.
6. If you have a named, sourced seasonal rule, record its result; otherwise skip this layer.
7. Read the hexagram and line text.
8. Separate observations, lineage rules, received text, and UAYA synthesis.
9. Write three practical sentences and a confidence label.
10. Record an alternative reading or inconclusive decision.
11. Review the outcome later without deleting misses.

Ti/Yong First

Before judging favorable or unfavorable, assign Ti and Yong from the moving line.

Term	Role
Ti	body or subject; in this course, the trigram without the moving line
Yong	function or matter in relation to Ti; in this course, the trigram containing the moving line

With one moving line, lines 1–3 make the lower trigram Yong and the upper trigram Ti; lines 4–6 make the upper trigram Yong and the lower trigram Ti. Do not default to lower=Ti.

Claim source: received Meihua Yishu, vol. 2, “General Instructions for Ti and Yong,” for the body/function frame and principal/matter distinction. In this course's single-moving-line convention, the moving trigram is Yong and the unchanged trigram is Ti; the line-position rule above makes that assignment reproducible.

Five Phase Direction

The direction matters.

Relation	Better wording
Yong generates Ti	The active matter supports the body or subject.
Ti generates Yong	The body or subject feeds the active matter, with possible cost.
Yong controls Ti	The active matter pressures or restricts the body or subject.
Ti controls Yong	The body or subject can manage or contain the active matter.
Same phase	Shared nature, reinforcement, rivalry, or excess.

This avoids the common mistake of calling generation always good and control always bad.

Example: Wood generating Fire can mean growth and expression. But if Wood is the body and Fire is the function, Wood is also being consumed to produce Fire. The reading may be productive and draining at the same time.

These are symbolic lineage relations, not physical causes or guarantees.

Time and Season

If a named lineage supplies a precise seasonal rule, record that rule and source before applying it. This course does not teach a seasonal strength algorithm. Do not import WWG line-state analysis into the reading.

Primary, Line, and Changed Hexagram

Read the result in three movements:

Layer	Function
Primary hexagram	The present moment-image.
Moving line	The pressure point where the image turns.
Changed hexagram	The structural result of changing the selected line; this course reads it as a possible direction, not a guaranteed future.

The changed hexagram is the deterministic state produced by the moving line. UAYA reads it together with Ti/Yong and the Five Phase relation as one possible development. That reading is interpretation, not another construction fact.

Course Case

Example type: invented teaching case. It has no reported outcome and is not evidence of predictive efficacy.

Question: “Does this workshop proposal have life in it?”

Calculation result:

• Primary hexagram: Fire over Heaven, Hexagram 14, Great Possession.
• Moving line: line 2.
• Changed hexagram: Fire over Fire, Hexagram 30, Clarity.

Interpretive table:

Layer	Reading
Observation	Li is above Qian; line 2 moves in the lower trigram; the result is Hexagram 30.
Ti	Unchanged upper Li, Fire: the subject in this course reading.
Yong	Changing lower Qian, Metal: the function or delivery vehicle.
Lineage relation	Ti Fire controls Yong Metal.
Received text	Hexagram 14, line 2, includes a large-wagon/carrying image; Hexagram 30 concerns Li, attachment/brightness.
UAYA synthesis	The visible idea may be able to discipline its vehicle, but control can require effort or become rigid.

Practical reading:

The selected moment presents a visible idea in tension with its delivery vehicle. The proposal may be able to discipline that structure, but doing so will require attention and could become rigid. Clarify the audience, schedule, promise, and delivery format before deciding; confidence is medium.

Write the Reading in Three Sentences

Use this format:

1. Moment image: What the primary hexagram shows.
2. Pressure point: What the moving line and Ti/Yong relation show.
3. Practical guidance: What to do next.

For the case:

The moment shows a visible idea above a strong vehicle. The moving lower trigram makes that vehicle the active matter, while Ti Fire controlling Yong Metal suggests manageable but effortful tension. Clarify the delivery structure before increasing promotion; confidence is medium.

Plausible alternative: Fire controlling Metal can also describe presentation requirements constraining an otherwise strong proposal. Because both readings fit the same symbols, later evidence must decide between them; the cast alone does not.

Interpretation Traps

Stop when the recorded layers support no coherent bounded statement, when two alternatives remain equally plausible, or when the question requires medical, mental-health, legal, financial, safety, or emergency judgment. Use inconclusive and the appropriate professional support rather than increasing certainty.

Practice Standard

For each reading, keep a short case note:

• Input cue.
• Calculation.
• Ti/Yong assignment.
• Five Phase relation.
• Primary, moving-line, and changed-hexagram synthesis.
• Three-sentence reading.
• Confidence: high only for arithmetic, lower for interpretation.
• Plausible alternative or inconclusive decision.
• Follow-up result.
• What you would change next time.

Review both apparent hits and misses. Do not revise the original notes after the outcome is known.
