A Plum Blossom reading should not stop at naming the hexagram.

The hexagram is the reading object. Interpretation begins after it appears.

The Reading Flow

Use this sequence:

  1. Name the primary hexagram.
  2. Name the changed hexagram.
  3. Identify the moving line.
  4. Assign Ti and Yong.
  5. Read the Five Phase relationship.
  6. Check whether time supports or weakens the important trigram.
  7. Read the hexagram and line text.
  8. Write a practical sentence.
  9. Record the outcome later.

Ti/Yong First

Before judging good or bad, decide what Ti and Yong are.

TermRole
Tithe body, base, matter, querent side, or thing being acted upon
Yongthe function, action, pressure, event, outer side, or thing acting

In simple readings, lower trigram can be Ti and upper trigram can be Yong. In event readings, the stable matter may be Ti and the interrupting cue may be Yong. In relationship readings, Ti/Yong must be assigned from the question.

Five Phase Direction

The direction matters.

RelationBetter wording
Yong generates TiThe active force supports the matter.
Ti generates YongThe matter feeds the active force, with possible cost.
Yong controls TiThe active force pressures or restricts the matter.
Ti controls YongThe matter can manage or contain the active force.
Same phaseShared nature, reinforcement, rivalry, or excess.

This avoids the common mistake of calling generation always good and control always bad.

Example: Wood generating Fire can mean growth and expression. But if Wood is the body and Fire is the function, Wood is also being consumed to produce Fire. The reading may be productive and draining at the same time.

Time and Season

If the reading uses calendar time, check whether the important trigram is seasonally supported.

Use this lightly unless the course or teacher has given a precise calendar rule. Plum Blossom is not WWG strength analysis. It can notice seasonal fit, but it should not pretend to run a full line-state algorithm.

Primary, Line, and Changed Hexagram

Read the result in three movements:

LayerFunction
Primary hexagramThe present moment-image.
Moving lineThe pressure point where the image turns.
Changed hexagramThe direction the situation opens into if the movement continues.

The changed hexagram is not a separate fortune pasted onto the first one. It is the transformed state produced by the moving line. In Plum Blossom, read it together with Ti/Yong and Five Phase direction: what changes, what becomes clearer, and what new imbalance or support appears?

Course Case

Question: โ€œDoes this workshop proposal have life in it?โ€

Calculation result:

  • Primary hexagram: Fire over Heaven, Hexagram 14, Great Possession.
  • Moving line: line 2.
  • Changed hexagram: Fire over Fire, Hexagram 30, Clarity.

Interpretive table:

LayerReading
Primary imageFire over Heaven: visible value carried by strong structure.
TiQian, Metal, the proposalโ€™s base and vehicle.
YongLi, Fire, visibility, message, and attention.
Five Phase relationFire controls Metal. Visibility pressures the structure.
Moving lineThe turning point is practical capacity and transport, not merely inspiration.
Changed imageFire over Fire: the matter moves toward more visibility and clearer attachment.

Practical reading:

The proposal has visible value, but the form needs strengthening. The audience, schedule, promise, and delivery vehicle must be clarified. If the structure can carry the visibility, the proposal becomes stronger. If not, the idea may look bright but fail to land.

Write the Reading in Three Sentences

Use this format:

  1. Moment image: What the primary hexagram shows.
  2. Pressure point: What the moving line and Ti/Yong relation show.
  3. Practical guidance: What to do next.

For the case:

The moment shows visible value over a strong but pressured base. The pressure point is the proposalโ€™s carrying capacity: the format has to support the attention it seeks. Clarify the delivery structure before increasing promotion.

Interpretation Traps

Trap Only reading hexagram names

Names are useful, but the method needs trigram relation, moving line, and context.

Trap Turning phases into moral labels

Generation can drain. Control can protect. Same phase can support or compete.

Trap Overpromising prediction

Plum Blossom shows a moment-image. It does not remove uncertainty or responsibility.

Practice Standard

For each reading, keep a short case note:

  • Input cue.
  • Calculation.
  • Ti/Yong assignment.
  • Five Phase relation.
  • Primary, moving-line, and changed-hexagram synthesis.
  • Three-sentence reading.
  • Follow-up result.
  • What you would change next time.

The method improves through tracked comparison, not through stronger claims.
